President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to mark the May Day celebrations, has urged organised labour to remain united like never before in the fight against the novel COVID-19.

According to him, it take only unity, resolute and discipline of the labour force for the country to be able to overcome the coronavirus.

“Today our nation requires its (organised labour) active involvement in this fight against the pandemic and I call upon all working people to step forward again,”

It was his conviction that, this can be achieved because organised labour has a long history of playing important role in Ghana’s attainment of independence and had since not stopped playing these critical roles to support the country’s development.

To appreciate this effort, he said: “The role of organised labour, especially during our struggle for freedom and independence from the British colonial power, is written in letters of gold. In the post-independence era, organised labour has continued to play a very constructive role in the development of our country.”

He added that to defeat the coronavirus required a collective responsibility of the government and social partners, to chart a course out of the pandemic onto a path of sustainable growth, progress and prosperity.

President Akufo-Addo stated that coronavirus has affected virtually all nations on the globe and as a result has muted, this year’s May Day celebrations.
