MTN Ghana has marked 15 years of Mobile Money (MoMo) with a commitment to investing in advanced security measures to safeguard its customers.

The celebration underscores MTN’s dedication to enhancing financial inclusion while tackling prevalent issues such as fraud.

At the event, Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager in charge of the Northern Business Sector, addressed the ongoing challenges of fraud.

He emphasized that MoMo fraud remains a significant concern that impedes the broader mission of promoting digital and financial inclusion in Ghana.

“Fraud is a critical issue that we are deeply committed to addressing,” Mingle said, noting that MTN Mobile Money Ltd is actively collaborating with stakeholders on awareness initiatives and investing in robust security solutions.

Reflecting on the journey, Mingle highlighted the transformative impact of MoMo since its inception.

“When we started 15 years ago, the financial landscape in Ghana was markedly different. Traditional banking services were out of reach for many, especially in rural and underserved areas. We recognized this gap and took on the challenge to bring financial services to everyone’s fingertips through mobile technology,” he said.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Empowering Communities: Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion,” captures the essence of MoMo’s impact. Mingle explained that MoMo began as a simple idea to enable mobile money transfers but has since evolved into an essential tool for everyday financial transactions.

It now supports various services including loans, insurance, international remittances, and investments.

“MoMo has become more than just a mobile money service; it is a platform that empowers individuals, transforms businesses, and strengthens communities,” Mingle stated.

He noted that MoMo has been pivotal for small and medium-sized enterprises, improving access to education, healthcare, and government services.

Despite the success over the past 15 years, challenges persist. Mingle acknowledged that while mobile connectivity has improved, coverage gaps remain, particularly in rural areas.

MTN is committed to expanding digital infrastructure to further enhance financial inclusion. He also stressed the importance of customer vigilance.

“Every customer plays a crucial role in safeguarding their own security. It’s essential to protect PINs, avoid suspicious links, and be cautious of unsolicited messages and calls,” Mingle advised.

As MTN Ghana celebrates this milestone, the company continues to emphasize its dedication to providing an exceptional customer experience.

The focus remains on enhancing service support to ensure accessibility and convenience for all customers, regardless of their location.

The event highlighted the collaborative efforts that have driven MoMo’s success and reinforced MTN’s commitment to advancing financial and digital inclusion in Ghana.
