Minister Glover pledges to make Accra clean
The recent clean-up campaign in Accra has achieved substantial success, with over 2,000 metric tons of plastic, sand, and various debris cleared from critical areas within the city.
This effort marks a significant step towards enhancing environmental cleanliness, as announced by Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover during the first Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting of the year.
Minister Glover highlighted the intensive clean-up operations undertaken under the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ initiative, initiated within his first thirty days in office.
He underscored the collaborative efforts with stakeholders such as the Ga Traditional Council and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, culminating in the successful launch of the 2024 Homowo Clean-Up exercise in June.
The clean-up, which commenced on July 2nd, targeted key areas including the Central Business District, Circle, Agbogbloshie, Jamestown, Bokum, Chokor, Agbogloshie, CMB, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and various ministries.
Minister Glover praised the active participation of community members and emphasized the importance of public engagement in maintaining cleanliness.
Addressing environmental concerns, Minister Glover expressed apprehension over encroachments on Ramsar Sites crucial for flood control, urging Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce regulations rigorously.
He highlighted ongoing challenges such as unauthorized livestock rearing along Dr. Hilla Limann Highway, stressing the need for strict adherence to by-laws to preserve public order.
The RCC meeting also focused on advancing developmental projects across the region, with Minister Glover urging timely completion amidst preparations for upcoming elections.
He announced plans for the distribution of streetlights to MMDAs to enhance community security and restore non-functional traffic lights for improved traffic management.
Looking ahead, Minister Glover outlined three key focus areas for the year: sanitation and waste management, rehabilitation of street and traffic lights, and bolstering security measures.
These initiatives are aligned with President Akufo-Addo’s vision to establish Accra as the cleanest city in Africa, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Greater Accra’s residents.
The Minister also announced forthcoming beach clean-up exercises aimed at improving sanitation conditions vital for tourism and local economies.
He acknowledged international collaborations with Chinese and Nigerian partners aimed at fostering local economic development through industrial cooperation and cultural exchanges.
Minister Glover concluded by reaffirming his dedication to service excellence and called upon all stakeholders to maintain momentum in achieving the region’s developmental goals.
The RCC plans to disseminate comprehensive progress reports through official channels to ensure transparency and accountability to the public.
As Accra continues its drive towards environmental sustainability and urban development, these initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in transforming the cityscape and enhancing the overall well-being of its residents.
