IGP Dampare Advocates for Democratic Legacy Amidst Democracy Cup Presentation
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), emphasized the enduring importance of democracy as he received the Democracy Cup from the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, during a ceremony at the Police Headquarters in Accra yesterday.
In his address, Dr. Dampare underscored the significance of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, asserting that the nation’s democracy has thrived over the past three decades, making Ghana a beacon of stability on the African continent.
He urged all Ghanaians, regardless of age or gender, to unite in safeguarding and nurturing this legacy for future generations.
“The Fourth Republic is here to stay,” Dr. Dampare affirmed. “We must work together to sustain and develop it for the benefit of ourselves, our children, and their children. Our commitment to ensuring peace and progress is unwavering.”
The presentation of the Democracy Cup symbolized not only Ghana’s democratic journey but also the collaborative efforts between Parliament and law enforcement to promote civic engagement and awareness.
Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at educating citizens about democratic principles through public forums, parliamentary sessions, and outreach programs across the nation.
Reflecting on the historical significance of Ghana’s democratic evolution, Mr. Asiamah recalled the pivotal moment on January 7, 1993, when the current constitution took effect.
He stressed Parliament’s pivotal role in nurturing democracy, noting efforts to engage citizens in the electoral process and promote tolerance and patience.”
The Democracy Cup represents competition in governance and reminds us that democracy thrives on choices and peaceful transitions of power,” Mr. Asiamah remarked. “It is a testament to our commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring a peaceful electoral process.”
The event also served as a platform for addressing the upcoming elections, with assurances from Dr. Dampare regarding the readiness of the National Election Security Task Force to maintain law and order during the electoral period.
