Expects significant cuts in utilities costs – Bawumia
Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, has pledged substantial cuts in electricity and public transportation costs if elected.
Specifically, he promises a 50% reduction in electricity costs and a 40% decrease in public transport fares.
Dr. Bawumia outlined these proposals during a rally in Dansoman on August 27, 2024, which drew supporters from Ablekuma West, North, South, and Central.
He highlighted his plans for 2024, emphasizing the benefits of his policies if he secures the presidency.
He detailed his strategy for reducing electricity costs through an increased focus on solar energy and proposed the introduction of an electric bus transit system to achieve the fare reductions.
He praised the current NPP government for advancements in health infrastructure, roads, employment, education, and digitalization, claiming it has outperformed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in these areas.
Dr. Bawumia also outlined plans to create 1 million digital jobs, enabling young Ghanaians to work internationally.
He noted Ghana’s achievements in digital innovations, such as mobile money interoperability and extensive use of drones in healthcare.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia promised free education for people with disabilities, improvements in passport application processes with the Ghana Card, and a ten-year driver’s license.
He also mentioned a flat rate for port charges to boost competitiveness. The rally was used to explain his gold for oil concept.
Challenging NDC candidate John Dramani Mahama to a debate, Dr. Bawumia criticized Mahama’s previous tenure, citing issues like the collapse of various sectors and shortages in public services.
In contrast, he praised the current government’s improvements in health services, including the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the distribution of free educational resources.
Ursula Owusu Akuful, MP for Ablekuma West, endorsed Dr. Bawumia, contrasting the NPP’s achievements with the NDC’s record and urging voters not to repeat past mistakes.
The event also featured speeches from various NPP candidates and performances by artists including Samini, Dada KB, and Joyce Blessing.
