The Member of Parliament (MP) for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA), Samuel Kofi Atta Mills has questioned the intentions of some four MPs on the majority side of Parliament who filed a private member motion to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of his late brother, President John Evans Fifi Atta Mills.

Mr. Mills referred to the motion filed by the Majority Chief-whip, Frank Annoh -Dompreh, Habib Iddrisu, Tolon MP, Davis Opoku Ansah, Mpraeso MP, and Yves Hanson Nortey, Tema Central, as a bad news.

According to him, there are equally important issues in the country that needed more attention from the MPs in order to soften the economic hardship that Ghanaians are facing.

“It’s A bad news. Why are they trying to cry more than the bereaved? Annoh-Dompreh is someone I used to respect from far away. He shouldn’t compel me to lose that respect I had for him. In a house where there are no leaders, children always act irresponsibly.

“Why would they always want to remind us of our pains every year? You, Annoh Dompreh, do you care about Professor Mills more than Honourable J. B. Danquah who was murdered at his house? Have you investigated that? Why?

“Focus on your politics Annoh-Dompreh. You sit at the front desk for NPP in Parliament. People are suffering in Ghana. Workers are going on strike. UTAG is on strike. All kinds of problems. Is this all that Annoh-Dompreh could think of? Oh, really Annah-Dompreh!

“We were taught in school the difference between stupidity, intelligence, wisdom… sometimes we should behave like people who use their heads for reasoning. Every year they will be using Prof. Mills’ death for politics. But let me tell you something, Prof Mills was the only sitting President who has died so far. “

Although the group led by Mr. Annoh-Dompre claimed that the spirit of their motion was to establish certain protocols in how to address future incidences, Mr. Mills simply said “these persons do not have any good intentions, they are only doing politics, and they know why they are doing that.

“What is their role in parliament? Because they have nothing to offer, is it the reason why they are spilling out all these. Annoh Dompre, how many times has he spoken about the number of strikes ongoing. Annoh-Dompre how many times have you spoken about this e-levy…Master let us stop this.”

“President Mills is the only President who has passed on so far. A word to the wise is enough. Where are those crying for the intervention of the wise? this is the time the wise are needed to speak. It just hurts that there are so many intelligent and prominent NPP members in parliament. Why have they kept them away from the front desk to appoint such an immature person to be telling us this.”

When he was urged by the host of the Accra-based radio station to be candid with his words, Mr. Mills responded: “If it was your brother who has died and all the time, people used it as a chewing stick because of politics. You Annoh-Dompre what do you care about Prof. Mills. It only hurts me that the Tema MP who is part of the group, I know the mother very well. The mother was a good friend of Prof. Mills and I know the mother very well. For you to get involved in this is below you, sir. I have a lot of suggestions for them to investigate but I don’t mention them on air.

He said it was not necessary for any investigation or an inquest to be conducted to establish the circumstance that led to the death of Prof. Mills, saying he has a copy of the autopsy report and it was done at the 37 Military Hospital.

“Why? Every year you want to remind us of our hurt. why can’t you allow sleeping dogs to lie? What is it? So this is the level, which our politics have reached. They should be ashamed of themselves. They were elected into Parliament to debate on behalf of the electorates so that kankey, which price has doubled from GHC1.00 to GH2.00, a dollar that at time they were voted into power was at GHC4.00 but now selling at GHC7.00; and petrol price, which has shot up to GHC8.00 will be addressed. Those are the bread and butter things that we as politicians should think about.

“But all you could think of is the president’s death should be investigated. What is he trying to do? Master be careful. Some of us are quiet in parliament because we have the wisdom, we think before we talk.

When they set up this committee they should call me as their first witness and I will be the last witness they will ever call.”

On whether he agrees with Samuel Koku Sitsofe Anyidoho who served under his brother’s government calls for an inquest into the death, the KEEA MP replied that “I will not dignify that guy with any response.”

“I have elders in my family and they always advise me. If you don’t want to be disrespected, don’t stoop so low (if you don’t want a dog to lick your mouth, don’t play with it.

On the question of whether the position he has taken reflects the collective view of the family, he said: “I’m the blood brother of Prof Atta Mills, the same mother, and the same father. Nobody can dispute that. I was in the custody of his dead body. I was with him when he became president till the day that he passed away. He passed away in my hand. how dare you guys always bring up this hurt. Why? Why can’t you let sleeping dogs lie? I repeat, he is the only sitting president in Ghana who has died in office so far.”
