Koforidua Circuit Court presided over by His Honour Eric Denin has remanded into police custody, the alleged driver of the Member of Parliament for Suhum’s driver, Samuel Kofi Agyei alias Jamalo.
The driver has been charged with one count of causing harm with an offensive weapon, contrary to Section 70 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) and would be appearing again before the court on September 7, 2021.
Thus, Jamalo was arraigned before the court on the allegation of causing harm to another person at funeral held at Suhum.
The court was told informed by the State Attorney yesterday that the complainants in the case are Ernest Lartey, Martin Odei and Charles Gyasi, who were Suhum New Patriotic Party (NPP) executive members.
The prosecutor told the court that the complainants reported to the police that the scuffle that ensued at a funeral at Suhum and resulted into one their members, Amoani sustaining cutlass wounds on the forehead.
The prosecutor, therefore, urged the court to remand the accused person, since investigations are still ongoing.
Lawyer for the accused rebutted that the facts presented by the prosecution are not entirely true and that there are videos in his possession, which indicated that the accused person was also attacked with stone. He added the accused is equally receiving medical treatment.
The lawyer argued before the court that any act that would disrupt the peace of the country is condemnable but the accused should be admitted to bail.
The lawyer said the charge levelled against his client is a bailable offence and Jamalo can meet its terms and conditions.
The defence counsel continued that the accused is not well and his situation might worsen if he continuous to be in police custody.
H/H Denin after listening to the opposing sides called the counsel and the prosecutor to his chambers. The court resumed shortly after almost 20 minutes with a decision the accused is remanded into police custody.
