An Accra Circuit Court has handed down three months sentence to Ese Pounds alias Sunshine in hard labour for attacking her creditor, Mimi Eze with granulated pepper and broken glass bottle.
Ese, who is unemployed was sentenced by the circuit court presided over by Mrs Christine Cann on the count of causing unlawful harm, contrary to section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960, Act 29.
The court further ordered the convict to pay an amount of ¢1,500.00 to Mimi to cater for her medical bills.
Details of the case as presented to the court by the prosecuting officer, Inspector Jonas Lawer is that the Mimi, the complainant, operates a boutique at Kotobabi Market, Spintex Road and resides at same location while Ese is unemployed and has no fixed place of abode.
He told the court that in the month of May 2021, the accused bought cloths on credit from the complainant and paid some, leaving a balance of GH¢ 25.00.
The convict, however, refused to pay the balance and started playing hide and seek with the complainant, hence all efforts made by Mimi to get Ese to pay the money proved futile.
Inspector Lawer added that on July 18, 2021 at about 7:00am, the complainant spotted the accused person at Kotobabi market and demanded for payment of the said money.
“In the process, the convict became offended and attempted to attack the complainant but bystanders intervened and separated the two,” he added.
He went on to tell the court that on the next day, July 19, 2021 at about 10:00pm the complainant together with her friends attended a birthday party at Nhyiraba Kwadwo, a Pub along the Spintex Road.
The prosecutor added that the complainant upon reaching the pub, met the convict also with her friends in the pub.
“On seeing the complainant, the accused became furious and attacked the complainant and put granulated pepper into her eyes. Complainant became momentarily blinded by effects of the pepper and as she struggled to find her way out, the accused person broke a bottle with which she intentionally inflicted a deep cut on the left face of the complainant,” he stressed.
According to him, Mimi sustained deep wounds and as a result, bleedef profusely from the injury, and in the process was rescued by those around.
The case was reported to the police but the convict went into hiding. However, a search led to the convict hideout at Nugua in Accra and was accordingly arrested.
Inspector Lawer informed the court the convict admitted to the offence in her caution statement.
