Bullion van robberies: Four police officers charged

Four law enforcement officers who are believed to have taken part in the series of bullion van robberies in Accra had been arraigned on two counts of robbery and remanded in police custody together with a civilian.

The accused persons are No. 58370 G/Const. Yaro Afisu Ibrahim, No. 58586 G/Const. Albert Ofosu @ Cyber, No. 58525, and Razak Alhassan @ Zak, scrap dealer.

The court presided over by Mrs. Patricia Amponsah was informed by the prosecuting officer, Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) Sylvester Asare that in the year 2021, the Ghana Police Service received a series of street robberies as well as attacks on bullion vans.

He said the Police Service in response mounted surveillance on the suspected robbers undertaking these unlawful activities within the capital of Ghana.

DSP Asare continued that on February 22, 2022, the Police received a report of an attack on a bullion van with Registration number GN 424-24 at North Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra by some gunmen.

As a result, he stated that the police launched an investigation into the alleged robbery, which led to the arrest of Constable Reindoiph Gyimah Ansah alias Pablo [deceased] who admitted the offense during interrogation.

“Further enquires led to the arrest of Lance Corporal [L/Cpl) Stephen Nyame [also deceased] and the accused persons herein. The accused persons during interrogation admitted that he took part in the multiple bullion van robberies recorded in the Greater Accra Region including, the robbery which took place in February 2021 at Kingsway opposite the Freemason Society, Baastona Spintex road in March 2021, Jamestown-Adedemikpo incident in June 2021 which led to the untimely death of Police Constable Emmanuel Osei,” he narrated.

He added that during the investigation, the late G/Cpl Stephen Nyame and Constable Remdolph Gyimah Ansah mentioned two Nigerians including Omor Miaja as their accomplices who are currently on the run.

According to him, L/Cpl Nyame and Constable Gyimah further admitted that some of the weapons used in the robberies were with their Nigerian accomplices around Ashiaman.

The prosecuting officer further told the court that on March 6, 2022, the late L/Cpl Stephen Nyame and Constable Randolph Gyimah Ansah alias Pablo led the Police to a suburb of Ashiaman to apprehend the said two Nigerians/

He said the Ashiaman operation raid resulted in an exchange of gunshots, which later led to the death of L/CplStephen Nyame and Constable Randolph Gyimah Ansah alias Pablo who sustained gunshot during the raid.

DSP Asare added that the investigation is still ongoing and prayed the accused persons are remanded.
