3 remanded in connection with soldier dealing firearms

The Accra Circuit Court has today remanded three persons in connection with a soldier who allegedly deals in firearms and ammunition trade.

The accused persons, Michael Kwesi Sakyi, Alex Dotse and Novor, answerable to two counts of illicit trafficking in firearms and ammunition, contrary to sections 23 (1) and 192A (1) of the 1992 construction.

The court presided over by Rosemary Torsu Baah refused the accused persons bail despite their lawyer’s pleading that they have fixed place of abode, they wil not will not interfer with police investigation, and also have people of substance to stand in as sureties for them.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sylvester Asare also objected to the accused persons’ plea and stated that they activity as firearms andammunition traffickers came to the spotlight somewhere in January this year.

The prosecutor said this was after the police had received information that some persons were believed to be trading in illegal firearms and ammunition.

According to him, the police then mounted their surveillance on them and others in custody.

This, he said led to the arrest of one Nancy Ashong, and 16 boxes of 7.2X39mm Ball (24 rounds of Ak-47) were gound at her kitchen.

He said Nancy told police during investigation that the illegal weapons found in her possession belonged to one Mohammed Makhoo who brought them to her for safekeeping.

DSP Asare continued that when a search was conducted at Makhoo’s room, one Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol with the serial No. FBU2848 was found.

The court was told that Nancy and Makhoo are currently in police custody, stating “Makhoo stated that Col Arafat Kunde of Ghana Armed Forces (64 Infantry Regiment) was the person who supplied him the boxes of AK-47 ammunition.

“Additionally, Corporal Kunde Makhoo with two SMG assault rifle.”

According to him, Cpl Kunde during interrogation (in custody) mentioned Michael Kwesi Sakyi, Alex Dotse and others at large his weapons source of supply.

Sakyi told the police that Cpl Kunde was his bodyguard but failed to give lead to his source of weapons and ammunition.

The police also gathered that Sakyi had an arrangement with Novor to discharge the remaining five boxes of AK-47 ammunition at Cpl. Kunde’s house at Spintex road.

The court was told that preliminary investigation proves that the accused persons are into illicit trafficking of firearms and ammunition.
