Trader, scrap dealer charged for buying slain soldier’s iPhone

Ibrahim Abdul Rakib, Scrap Dealer, and Saflanu Musah aka Dayorgu, trader, have been charged with dishonestly receiving a mobile phone allegedly stolen from a slain soldier at Ashaiman-Taifa in the Greater Accra region.

Ibrahim allegedly bought the said mobile, which was an iPhone at the cost of GH¢300.00 from on Samuel Tetteh also known as Wiper and Abubakar Sadick alias Birdman.

Ibrahim also sold the iPhone to Musah at the cost of GH¢350.00, making a profit if GH¢50.00.

Narrating blow to blow account to the Ashaiman Circuit Court, presided over Simon Gaga, yesterday the prosecution team led by Superintendent Sylvester Asare said the iPhone in question is a proceed of crime.

He told the court that iPhone was robbed robbed from late Immoro Sheriff, a soldier, by Samuel Tetteh alias Wiper, aged 20 years and unemployed, Abubakar Sadick alias Birdman, and Naadu, 20 years and a Scrap dealer.

As a result, Samuel and Abubakar had been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery.

According to him, a total of six people had been charged in connection with the case, and the other two are Mohammed Yussif, scrap dealer, and Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim, a driver.

Mohammed and Abdul are facing the same count of dishonestly receiving for assisting Saflanu Musah alias Dayorgu to disposal of the iPhone.

All of the accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought up against them by the state and were remanded into police custody by the court.

Giving detailed account of how the issues unfold in respect of the late soldier, Supt Asare said on March 4, 2023, the Police received information that an adult male had been found lying dead at Ashiaman Taifa in the Greater Accra region. 

He narrated to the court that upon the receipt of the Information, a team of Police officers proceeded to the said location and confirmed the incident.

The police team retrieved a number of items at the crime scene, including a knife with blood stains on it and a backpack.

In the backpack, the police found one Samsung tablet, one Apple laptop, one military uniform with the name tag “Immoro,” eight other items of clothing, as well as a Ghana card and a Health Insurance card bearing the name Immoro Sherrif.

The body of the deceased was thereafter conveyed to a hospital for preservation and autopsy. 

Police, immediately, commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased and this led to the arrest of the accused persons on March 10, 2023, at their hideout at Ashiaman. 

Investigation has established that the deceased was a Soldier stationed at 3rd Infantry Battalion, Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region.

Investigations further revealed that on March 3, 2023, the deceased had visited a female friend at Ashaiman Newtown at about 10 to 10:30pm and left the place in the middle of the night at about 01:30am, on the 4th March. 

Investigations further had it that at about 1:45am, on March 4, 2024, the accused persons attacked the deceased at Taifa Ashiaman, and for the purposes of stealing a mobile phone from Immoro Sherrif, stabbed him with an intention to overcome the resistance of he victim.

Samuel and Abubakar successfully robbed the deceased of his mobile phone and sold same to Ibrahim Abdul Rakib at the cost of GH¢300 00 and Ibrahim Rakib subsequently sold the phone to Sefianu Musah alias Dayorgu for GHC 350 00.

Sofianu Musah, however, Safianu is being evasive as to the whereabouts of the phone and claims to have sold it to Yussif Mohammed for GHC 500 00 and later to Abdul Gafuru Abdul Karim.

The prosecuting officer told the court that investigation is underway continues to recover the phone.
