Trader bits off police officer’s finger to secure two years jail term

Sergeant Abu Kwame in an attempt to defend a colleague police officer from being attacked by a trader, Anoma Promise, 25, ended up with his finger bitten off.

The trader was being arrested taking charge of a tricycle belonging to a business Henry Andzre Quainoo on an agreement to make sales.

Three weeks after operating the tricycle, Promise failed to fulfil his part of the agreement by making sales to Mr Quainoo. The sales cumulated for the three weeks period was GH₵300.00.    

Mr Quainoo confronted Promise and to his surprise, the late claimed he is the rightful owner of the tricycle and failed to hand over same to the businessman.

A complain was lodged with the Nungua Police and three officers were assigned to effect the arrest of Promise on November 3, 2019.

Upon reaching location of Promise, Sgt Abu Kwame excused himself to use the loom but only returned Promise attacking his colleagues.

According to the Prosecutor, Supt Alex Odonkor holding brief for Chief Inspector Emmanuel O. Agyei to an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mrs Ellen Ofei Ayeh that Promise while being escorted to the vehicle suddenly attacked Lance Corporal Jerry Opei.

This follows a request made by Promise to be allowed to place some calls, which was refused.

He added that while Sgt Abu Kwame was trying to prevent Promise from attacking, his right forefinger landed into the mouth of convict and he bit it off.

He continued that the situation made it comparable to call for reinforcement, which minimum force was used to overpower Promise and whisked to the station for investigation.

Promise was charged with stealing, resisting arrest and causing harm.

The Convict who was a resident Texpo at Spintex was slapped with two year for stealing a tricycle worth GH₵7, 000.00 and causing harm by the court but was discharged and acquitted of resisting lawful arrest.
