Soldier in viral video is a civilian -GAF
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) renounces a “soldier” in a viral video purportedly to be the ring leader of a car snatching syndicate.
In a media release issued today by the GAF and signed by the Acting Director of Public Relations, Commander Andy La-Anyan said its attention has been drawn to a video, and pictures making rounds on social media of a man wearing a military uniform who has been apprehended together with others for attacking and snatching cars from unsuspected victims.
It said the arrest was made at Buipe, although the “soldier” and his alleged accomplices were said to have snatched the car at Tamale.
This, the release said: “In the said videos and pictures, one of the suspects is seen wearing military camouflage uniform and has been described variously as a soldier of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“We wish to state categorically that the suspect is not a soldier of the Ghana Armed Forces. The Ghana Armed Forces is worried about the rising spate of impersonation by civilians, either wearing military uniforms or posting fake pictures of themselves as military officers to defraud unsuspecting Ghanaians. The unauthorized sale of military uniforms and military pattern gadgets by some vendors contributes to this state of affairs and is inimical to national security.”
The release said GAF is ever ready to liaise with the police to investigate the source of the military uniform in this particular incident, to put an end to the unauthorized sale of military uniforms across the country.
It urged the public not to shy away from providing information to the security agencies to enable them to put a stop to the canker.
“The general public is advised once again to be circumspect in dealing with persons who pose as military personnel. Please contact the Directorate of Public Relations on 0544338030,” it added.
