Shop attendant turned robber gets bail
Ike Oppong and Charles Lamptey, who by day work as a shop attendant and contractor respectively, have been accused of allegedly robbing a taxi driver as well as attempting to collect ransom from the victim’s family.
The two were arrested by the Airport Police while on their way to collect the ransom from the victim’s family.On Friday, December 23, 2023, Ike and Charles were put before the Accra Circuit Court on the charges, conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery.
They pleaded not guilty before the court, the presided by Her Honour Susana Eduful.
The duo allegedly perpetrated the crime with Nana Yaw who is currently on the run.
Mrs. Eduful has granted accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 each to be justified by two sureties, one of whom should earn a monthly salary of GH¢2,500.00.
The case is adjourned to January 31, 2024.Prosecuting the case, Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the court that the victim, Samuel Oketehu is a taxi driver and lives at Dzorwulu while Ike and Charles reside at Akweteyman and Santa Marie respectively.
Nana Yaw, who is unemployed, also resides at Akweteyman.According to the prosecuting officer, on December 17 at about 5:30am, the driver was stopped by Ike and Nana Yaw at Dzorwulu Junction and was hired to convey them to Tema Community 18 Junction.
Upon reaching a section the Community 18 Junction, Ike and Nana Yaw pulled a knife and a pair of scissors on the driver.
The accused persons succeeded in robbing the driver off his two mobile phones, one power bank, ear piece and cash in the sum of GH¢400.00.
Few hours later, the victim’s family received series of phone calls from the alleged robbers, demanding money from them.Ironically, the robbers were lured by the victim’s family to meet them at Shashi for the said money.
Without reaching their goal, Ike and Charles were arrested to Airport police station and detained for further investigation by the Tema Community 18 Police.
Ike and Charles denied the offences in their cautioned statement, claiming that it was Nana Yaw who instructed them to go and collect the money for him.
The prosector said, after investigation, they was charged with the offences and put before the honourable court.
