Sherry Ayittey blamed for ambulance brouhaha
Late Hanny-Sherry Naa Sakley Ayittey, former Minister for health under the erstwhile Mahatma administration, has gone to her grave with blames of not acting right in the ambulance deal.
A former Chief Director of the ministry, Dr. Sylvester Anemana has said the late former minister failed to appreciate the contract signed between Ghana and Dubai organisation, Big Sea Trading LLC for the supply of some 200 ambulances.
He told an Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe, on Thursday that late Sherry’s inability to fulfill the country’s part of the bargain was the reason the ambulances supplied were not good for purpose.
Dr. Anemana the late minister was supposed to have visited Dubai with a team to conduct pre-inspection delivery of the ambulances but failed.
Although the ambulances arrived in Ghana empty, he explained that Big Sea gave assurance that the equipment would be shipped separately.
He, therefore, told the court that Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was not occupying the political position of a deputy minister for Finance in 2012, when negotiations of the ambulance contract began.
Dr. Amenana, legislature Dr. Ato Forson and Big Sea local partner, Jakpa@Business owed by Richard Jakpa have been accused of causing financial loss to the state to the tune of €2.7 million in the ambulance deal.
The three have pleaded not guilty to counts of willfully causing financial loss to the state, abetment to willfully causing financial loss to the state, contravention of the Public Procurement Act and intentionally misapplying public property.
The contract sum for the supply of 200 Mercedes Benz ambulances to government was at a total cost of €15.8 million.
