An Accra Circuit Court today refused to grant a bail application filed by Lawyer Gary Nimako Marfo for the leader and founder of Glorious Word and Power Ministry, Rev Isaac Owusu Bempa and four others.

Rev Owusu Bempa and the others were before the court for having threatened to kill one Patricia Oduro Koranteng, hitherto, called Nana Agradaa who also is the complainant in the case.

Thus, the reverend and the others who are believed to be his church members went to Nana Agradaa now Evangelist Mama Patricia’s house and allegedly threatened that they will cause her force disappearance.

As a result, the court presided over by Mrs Afia Owusua Appiah said per the magnitude of the offence levelled against them, the five were to be remained in lawful police custody and reappear before her on September 20, 2021.

The court said the quintuple had only arrested the accused persons, therefore, it was necessary that they are kept in custody to enable the police to have more time to do their work.

However, the quintuple pleaded not guilty to charges of conduct conducive to breach of peace, the threat of death, and assault public officers have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Brief facts presented before the court by the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Simon Terkpetey indicated that the “Man of God” together with about 40 macho men stormed the complainant, now Evangelist Mama Patricia’s house to threaten to beat and kill her.

The prosecutor continued that Patricia, therefore, called the police to lodge a complaint, after which Rev. Owusu Bempa was invited to the police station but declined to honour the invitation.

The police then proceeded to first accused church premises to effect his arrest but some of the church members charged at the police officers, wounding one of them.

Nonetheless, lawyer Gary Nimako Marfo urged the court to grand Rev Owusu Bempa and the others bail, arguing that they are innocent until proven guilty.

He based his application of the grounds that his clients would not abscond if granted bail and are always ready to appear before the court to defend themselves.

However, C/Ins Terkpetey opposed the bail application, insisting the court remand the accused into police custody, since the investigation was still ongoing.

In connection to the case, a press release issued by the police in September indicated that Rev Owusu Bempa was arrest by three others, who are Michael Boateng, Frederick Ohene, and Nathaniel Agyekum.

While two other suspects are on the run but the police said they are vigorously hunting after them.

The press release signed by the Acting Director-General of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwasi Ofori, said the arrest was after critical analysis of videos that were created and circulated, purported to contained threats, the brandishing of a weapon and assault of police personnel on September 12.

“During the operation, some member of the church believed to have been under the direction of Reverend Owusu Bempa assaulted some police officers,” it said. “The injured personnel have received medical treatment and responding to treatment.”
