Phone ‘fraudsters’ on trial

Eight alleged phone fraudsters had been charged before an Accra Circuit Court for various crimes.

The crust of their offences was fabricating mobile phones and selling the same to unsuspected public.

They are Kwesi Awaful, 27 and a bar operator, Ibrahim Seidu, 28, Richard Yeboah, 24, Samuel Akafor, 22, are Head Porters, whiles Sixtus Apambila, 20, Msor Anthony, 19, and Titus Aniah, 20, are all scrap dealers, and Prince Aforkwa, 26, a trader.

The accused persons have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime, preparation to commit a crime, and attempt to commit a crime.

The court, presided over by His Honour Issac Addo remanded them into police custody for failing to prove fixed place of adobe by prosecuting officer Inspector Jonas Lawer that the complainants in the case are police officers stationed at the Regional Headquarters of Accra. 

He said the alleged crime of the accused persons came to the notice of the Regional Police Administration to the effect that they gather around the said the June Fourth Park and fabricate mobile phones to defraud the public. 

Therefore, on May 20, 2023, at about 11:30am, the Police Regional Command departed a Team of Personnel and gathered intelligence to the scene and to their surprise,  the accused persons were spotted engaging with customers in an attempt to defraud them with those phones.

The accused were arrested on the act and a spot search was conducted in their pocket led to the retrieval of seven different types of looked like phones.
During investigation, it was revealed that the bar operator is the gang leader for the accused persons operating in the market. 

He added that investigation further revealed that the accused persons were always conspired to defraud unspecified number of people victims on daily basis.
Inspector Lawyer told the court that  after investigation all accused Persons were charged with the offences and arraigned before the court.
