Off-Duty Police Officer Arrested for Fatal Shooting
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare together with the members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) visited the family of Stanley Ahadz, who was allegedly shot and killed by an off-duty police officer.
The visit aimed to extend condolences and assure the family that a thorough investigation would be conducted, with a promise to hold the officer accountable.
According to a police statement, General Constable Smith Gyeke, identified as a ride-hailing driver and off-duty police officer, was arrested on Sunday, August 18, 2024, for allegedly shooting Ahadz at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra.
The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. and reportedly resulted from a dispute over a fare.The body of the deceased has been sent to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while Constable Gyeke remains in police custody as investigations proceed.
In response to the tragedy, a police clinical psychologist and other officers have been assigned to support the grieving family.
The police have assured the public that the investigation will be conducted with the highest level of diligence to ensure justice is served.
