Nigerian jailed 5 years for sex trafficking
The Accra Circuit Court ‘7’ presided over by Ellen Ofei Ayeh has sentenced a 25-year-old and unemployed, Angel Ubah to five years imprisonment for trafficking another female from Nigeria for sexual exploitation in Ghana.
The sentence was handed down to Ubah on Friday, April 1, 2022, after she pleaded guilty simplicita on Monday, March 28.
The facts of the case as presented by the prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Anquandah are that both the complainant (name withheld) and the convict are both Nigerians and they all live at Obinim Guest House at Adjiriganor Junction, a suburb of Accra.
He said somewhere in February this year, the convict together with her syndicate in Nigeria known as Chizom conspired to recruit, transport, and traffic the complainant from Nigeria to Ghana.
The prosecuting officer added that while the complainant was on her way, the convict was in constant communication with her, assuring her of the numerous job opportunities available in Ghana.
Unfortunately, he said the complainant was informed about the nature of the job, prostitution, which she would be engaged in the next day after her arrival in Ghana.
The prosecutor explained to the court that the convict picked her unexpected victim at the Spintex Road to Obinim Guest House and later gave the complainant details of the job she promised her to be anything other than prostitution.
“The complainant became frightened and told the accused that prostitution is a taboo in her culture, which the consequence is death or madness but the convict insisted, gave her a condom, and forced her into prostitution,” he said.
He further narrated that the complainant did the prostitution for a week and rendered an account of GH¢200.00 to the convict.
The prosecutor added that when the complainant realized that the job offered to her was very risky and could not bear it any longer, escaped and became destitute in town for a week until she was rescued by a Good Samaritan who took her to the Police Station to make a formal complaint, leading to the arrest of the convict.
He said after investigation, the convict was charged with the offense use of trafficked person.
