MTN supports 60 needy tertiary students
Sixty (60) needy but brilliant tertiary students studying Science, Technology, English, and Mathematics (STEM) have received MTN reloaded ‘Bight Scholarship Awards in Kumasi, Ashanti region.
The awarded scheme was held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Faculty of Law, yesterday.
Mr Samuel Korankye, a Board Member of MTN Foundation on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), explained that, about 1, 900 students from 17 public tertiary institutions across the country applied and 200 were shortlisted for interviews.
He continued that 120 applicants were further selected for the scholarship award, which covers laptops, accommodation, tuition fees and allowances.
Mr. Korankye stated that MTN focuses on STEM, as a bedrock to build students’ capabilities in digitalisation and prepare them for work.
He added that students who ste living with disability and pursuing careers in vocational skills, is a good sign of their readiness to face the world and its evolving needs.
According to him, this is why MTN is committed to support them in their education at the various tertiary schools.
“MTN is committed to providing opportunities for the students through education that will enhance their livelihoods,” Mr Korankye.
He indicated that, MTN believes that this year’s edition of Bright Scholarship will touch the lives of students who are in need of financial assistance to complete their education.
Mr Korankye said MTN foundation will continue to invest in education, healthcare, economic empowerment among others.
Aside the Bright Scholarship initiative, MTN Ghana Foundation has over the years awarded over 1,178 scholarships to students from basic school to tertiary level.
In a speech delivered on behalf of Mr Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti regional minister, by Mr Samuel Korankye, Board Member of MTN foundation Ghana, commended the communication company for the laudable initiative.
He said the initiative clearly demonstrates MTN Ghana’s corporate social responsibility readiness to ensure brighter future for today’s students in the country.
He was impressed with MTN commitment provide opportunities for brilliant but needy students in the area of education as well as to enhance their livelihoods.
The Minister reiterated that this year’s edition of Bright Scholarship will touch the lives of students who are in need of financial assistance to complete their education.
Prof.Wilson Agyare Agyei, the Director of Students Affairs at KNUST also lauded MTN-Ghana continuous investment in Education.
He added that many students are facing financial challenges, therefore, schemes such as this brings them great relief and enable them to focus on their study.
