The sentence was passed on him by the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Afia Owusua Appiah, last week after having gone through a full scale trial.

Alhaji Abu Mohammed, a self-acclaimed businessman, will serve one year each for causing unlawful damage and unlawful entry, and four years for stealing. He will serve four years, as the sentences are to run concurrently.

In sentencing the convict to prison in hard labour, the judge also considered the fact that he has spent one year two in custody since his arrest and arraignment before the court as well as he is a family man with four children depending on him.

Brief facts

The court was told by the police prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu that complainant and convict are residents of Accra, specifically Ogbojo and Ashongman Estates respectively.

He said on April 27, 2023, at about 5:25pm, whilst Mr. Boadu and his family were out of the house, the convict used a pickaxe and broke burglar proof and padlocks to the house.

After gaining access to the house, he further caused damage to four wooden doors, valued GH¢9,200.0, leading to Complainant’s bedroom.

He ransacked the room and made away with the Complainant’s unregistered 2017 White Range Rover Supercharger vehicle, Honda Accord vehicle key, laptop bag and an unspecified amount of money.

On April 30, 2023, acting upon intelligence, the Police arrested the convict at Ashongman Estates while attempting to sell the vehicle for US$50,000.00.

He then led the Police to a hotel at Ashongman Estates where he lodged.

The Police retrieved the 2017 White Range Rover Supercharger vehicle, Honda Accord vehicle key and the laptop bag from the hotel.

Further investigation at the hotel revealed that the convict within the period of lodging at the hotel collected the said pickaxe a worker of the hotel and used same for the operation and failed to return it since he left it at the crime scene.

A thorough search conducted in the hotel room where the the convict lodged, revealed a pair of sneakers worn by him during commission of the crime.

The Accused person was charged with the offences and arraigned before Court.
