Gynecologist Dispels Myths About Fibroid Surgeries, Emphasizes Early Detection
Dr. Caroline Ladzekpo, a distinguished gynecologist at Plus Medical Center, has sought to dispel misconceptions surrounding fibroid surgeries while stressing the critical importance of early detection and timely medical intervention for women’s health.
Dr. Ladzekpo, in her recent address, highlighted that contrary to popular belief, fibroid surgeries frequently preserve fertility.
However, she stressed the importance of regular gynecological visits for early detection and prompt intervention.”Delay in seeking medical care due to fear or lack of symptoms knowledge is common among women.
Fibroids, benign tumors that develop in the uterus, affect a significant number of women globally, often leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and reproductive health challenges.
“Many women fear that undergoing fibroid surgery may impact their ability to conceive. However, modern surgical techniques often allow for the removal of fibroids while preserving fertility,” Dr. Ladzekpo reassured.
She emphasized the need for women to schedule regular gynecological visits, citing that delayed medical care due to fear or lack of symptom awareness remains a common issue among patients.
“Early detection plays a crucial role in managing fibroids effectively. Recognizing symptoms such as persistent pelvic pain, abnormal menstruation, and changes in urinary habits can lead to better outcomes,” Dr. Ladzekpo advised.
Fibroids, though non-cancerous, can significantly impact a woman’s quality of life if left untreated. They can cause discomfort, affect fertility, and sometimes require surgical intervention depending on their size and location.
Dr. Ladzekpo’s insights come at a time when awareness about women’s health issues, including fibroids, is gaining momentum globally.
By addressing misconceptions and advocating for proactive healthcare measures, she hopes to empower women to prioritize their reproductive health and seek timely medical advice when needed.
In a passionate plea to the Ghanaian government, Funny S. Palmer, a survivor of fibroid, has called for comprehensive coverage of fibroid treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Currently, NHIS only partially covers the costs, leaving patients burdened with significant expenses.
Palmer, speaking during the recent Fibroid Awareness Month celebrations in Accra, emphasized that expanding NHIS coverage would not only alleviate financial strain on patients but also encourage more women to seek timely treatment, potentially saving lives.
Citing statistics that highlight black women’s increased susceptibility to fibroid development compared to other races, Palmer underscored the urgency for enhanced medical support and research in this area.
“I battled fibroids for years, enduring surgeries and immense discomfort. Many women suffer silently due to insufficient awareness and financial barriers,” Palmer stated.
Kisha Bird of Travel Diva Inc., a supporter of the awareness campaign, shared her personal struggle with undiagnosed fibroids for 15 years. Her experience, she believes, underscores the critical need for greater education and early detection efforts.
“I discovered my condition in Ghana after years of debilitating symptoms. Awareness and access to information are crucial to empowering women globally,” Bird expressed.
The call for expanded NHIS coverage coincides with ongoing global efforts to improve women’s health and access to essential medical services.
As stakeholders rally for policy changes, the hope is to mitigate the impact of fibroids on women’s lives and foster a culture of proactive healthcare management.
