Evidence against Akuapem Poloo overwhelming – lawyer
The 90 days sentencing of Rosemary Brown aka Akuapem Poloo today by an Accra Circuit Court has been received with mix feelings by the general public but her legal counsel says her punishment could have been harsher, if the trial had travelled its full length.
The defence counsel Mr Andrew Vortia told journalists in an interview shortly after the court presided over by Christina Cann handed down the three months, he the court acted within the remit of the law, since the evidence against his client was overwhelming.
He disclosed that during the Case Management Conference (CMC) the evidence brought against Akuapem Poloo was stunning, hence urged her to plead guilty in order not to waste the court’s time.
Effectively, she changed her plea from not guilty to guilty to the charges of publishing obscene materials and domestic violence.
However, Mr Vortia held a contrary view that since Akuapem Poloo did not waste the court’s time and giving the fact that she is a first time offender and a single mother, the court will not have visited her with this imprisonment fate.
Nonetheless, he promised to rely on what he described as ‘plan B’, thus appealing against the sentence at the High Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, whether “Plan B” fails or materialise, Akuapem Poloo is currently in prison for posting nude picture with her son to mark his seventh birthday.
Akuapem Poloo was reported by the Director of Child’s Rights, Bright Appiah who believes in the fundament rights of children being protected.
