Court grants Shipping Consultant bail over sale of ‘fake chemical’

A 46-year Shipping Consultant, Owen Kwame Frempong, nicknamed Darling boy, has been able to secured court bail in an amount of GHC60, 000 and one surety to be justified by earning not less than GHC2, 000 monthly salary.

Owen is the second accused [A2] in a trial that involves another person, one Evans Owureko Amofa as A1.

The two are facing the law for the various roles they played for allegedly scamming a businessman of US$29000, equivalent to GHC1638, 500.

The Circuit Court judge Mr Emmanuel Essandoh granted Owen bail while remanded Evans into a lawful custody.

Owen’s was considered for a bail after his lawyer Paul Arbaliga prayed the judge to be magnanimous with his clients and grant them bail as well as the Prosecution also informing the court that A2 has paid US$4,000 out of the US$10, 000, he received from the total amount.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Eric Pobee told the judge that the two had been put before the court as a result of selling “fake chemical” by name Carbo, used in manufacturing of hand sanitizer to a businessman.

 According to the Inspector Pobee, the complainant in this case is into a number of businesses and the office is located in Accra.

He said the complainant got to know the accused persons somewhere in April this year, when his boss placed a request for Carbo chemical and, as a result a witness the case was contacted for an assistance.

The prosecutor said the witness also contacted Evans, who promised to be of help and in the process, A1 was to the complainant, for which they exchanged contacts.

 Evans assured the complainant that he knows someone who can supply the quantity of the chemical they are requesting for and by that Owen was also introduced as the supplier.

Evans later called the complainant and informed him that he was ready with the chemical so they should meet at Prampram so that he can take delivery of the chemical.

On May 2, 2020, the complainant together with his boss and other persons serving as witnesses in this case went to Prampram with the hope to pay and collect the said chemical.

The meeting, which was held at a certain spot, had certain a lady believed to have been sent by Owen to deliver the supposed Carbo chemical, which was in an Ice chest to A1 for an onward delivery to the complainant and his boss.

After allegedly inspecting the ice chest content, which look like what it supposed to be with the physical eyes, on the instant, the complainants paid an amount of US$29000 to A1, who departed with the lady to meet A2 with the money.

Shortly, after the complainants departed ways with the accused person, they were confronted by these police officers who were later found to be friends of Owen and Evans.

The police officers effected the arrest of the complainants and seized the ice chest containing the Carbo as well.

The complainant suspicious of how the event unfold reported the matter to the Accra regional Police Command, upon which those police officers had been interdicted as well as put under investigation.

It was also during police investigation that it came to light that the Carbo chemical was fake.

The accused persons are facing the charges of defrauding by false pretence.

They are to appear before the court this Wednesday.
