Court Blocks Democracy Hub’s Protest at Jubilee House
The Ghana Police Service has secured a court injunction preventing the Democracy Hub from holding a protest at Revolution Square, directly opposite Jubilee House.
This decision follows the group’s refusal to consider alternative locations for their planned demonstration.
At a press briefing on September 18, 2024, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi explained that an assessment of the proposed site revealed potential risks to public order, safety, and health.
The Democracy Hub had notified police of their intention to protest from September 21 to 23, 2024.After suggesting alternative locations, the police found that the Democracy Hub was insistent on using Revolution Square, leading them to seek a court ruling.
The High Court subsequently granted the injunction, prohibiting the protest at that site.ACP Ansah-Akrofi noted that the police are willing to ensure security for the protesters if a mutually acceptable location is chosen.
“The Ghana Police Service has not stopped Democracy Hub from protesting,” she stated, emphasizing that the issue lies solely in the location.
The police are committed to fostering dialogue with the organizers to uphold the right to peaceful demonstration while prioritizing public safety.
