Akoto Ampaw- PhD doesn’t enlightens a villager
President Akufo-Addo’s lawyer, Mr Akoto Ampaw has descended heavily on some members of the public who are educated but find no sense in the fight for the LGBTQI+ community.
According to Mr Ampaw, this does not surprise him at all, as holding academic degree like Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) does not necessarily entangled how one was raised up in a village setting.
He made these comments at a strategic forum workshop for Civil Society under the United Nations Universal Periodic Review in Accra yesterday.
Mr Ampaw contended that higher education is not tantamount to how one view the world in respect of human rights but how they were brought up, especially in the villages.
He said: “…most of us come from [the] village. So you grew up in a village context with a certain cultural view point and after you got to University and become a PhD holder but in terms of your world view, it is that same world view that you picked up from where you were born, which really shapes you, no matter how educated you are.
“That is why there must be a really special effort to educate the population on human rights’ importance and significance for our social and political wellbeing.”
Ghana has a lots to gain if the idea of human rights is fully integrated into the educational system right from the primary school, he adds.
He equally descended heavily on the media for trekking similar path as those village PhD holders.
The lawyer said the know nothing about human rights issues, hence must find it necessary to educate it’s members.
He said: “When you listen to the cavalier and nonchalant manner, in which some of the presenters make mockery of these rights and promotes the use of unprintable words on their stations, I think our media need self-education on human rights.”
He continued: “They cannot assume that they understand the history and its intricacies and the legal dimensions of human rights. [It is] further at the very core of our society as constitutional democracy is human rights. They need to understand that that is at the heart of the rule of law and the media plays a very important social and educational role.
“They need educate themselves on human rights because as the saying goes the educator him/herself ought to be educated.”
