5 workers allegedly stolen GH¢2.5m from employer

An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Samuel Bright has been told that employees of K. Ofori Enterprise Limited had conspired to steal items worth GH¢2, 568,770.40 from the company.

The court was informed by Prosecuting Officer DSP Augustine Yirenkyi on Thursday that the employees involved were Santa Nangba, 27 and sales manager, Peter Bawila, 27 and supervisor, William Dagadu, 27,  Michael Jeffery, 28 and technician, and Felix Ofori Boafo, 36 and a cashier.

He indicated to the court that the accused persons dishonestly appropriated 9,110 bags of cement, 8mm iron rods, 10,428 pieces, 10mm iron rod, 1,949 pieces, 11.5mm iron rods, 8443 pieces, 12mm iron rod 5,913pieces, 14mm iron rod 2,620 pieces, 16mm 2,643 pieces, nails 682 boxes and binding wire 567 rolls.

As a result, the prosecutor said the accused persons had been charged with the offences – conspiracy to commit a crime to with stealing and stealing.

However, all the accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the offences and were remanded into police custody to reappear on January 5, 2023.

BRIEF FACTS

According to DSP Yirenkyi, the Director of Kwadwo Ofori Enterprise Limited, Frank Kwadwo Ofori whereas the accused persons, were his employees whom he has trained to manage his various branches. 

He said the accused persons were working in Accra, prior to their transfer to manage the company’s branches in Cape Coast.

In order to perform their duties, he stated that the accused persons were supplied with iron rods, cement, binding wire and nails to be sold by the complainant in large quantity.

 The complainant trusted the accused persons especially Santa who was his sales manager of the said branch. 

Mr Acquah was told that on or before September, 2022, the accused persons requested for bags of cement to be supplied to them and in pursuance of that, the complainant realised that the accused person have about 10,000 bags of cement in stocks and he became skeptical as to why the accused persons were again requesting for another cements among other materials. 

However, the complainant through one of his employee got to know that the accused persons had already sold all the cement, which they were having in stocks but failed to render account. 

The complainant became alarmed and together with his accounting officers conducted stocking at the said branch in Cape Coast. 

The exercise revealed a net shortage of stocks to the tune of GH¢2,615,011.30, which made the complainant more alarmed and invited all the accused persons to his head office at Spintex, Accra.

 On December 17, 2022, the accused persons were interrogated by the complainant at his head office and they admitted having stolen the materials such as iron rods, cements, binding wire and nails to the tune of GH¢2, 568,770.40 and wrote an under taken, pleading with to refund the money.

 On the same day, the complainant reported the matter to the police for investigation and on December 20, 2022, the accused persons were subsequently arrested.

 They admitted the offence in their respective caution statements.

Investigation revealed that the accused persons had sold the materials, which were supplied to them without accounting for it to the complainant.
