2 car snatchers jailed 50 years

An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah has sentenced two young men to a total of 50 years imprisonment.

The convicts are Sunday Bawa alias Joe Apussy (A1) and Musah Ayuba (A2), both 22 years and labourers were to serve 25 years each.

The accused persons who resided at Teshie Tebibiano were reported to the police by complainant George Obeng, a taxi driver and a resident of Kasoa Liberia Camp.

In a brief facts presented by Chief Inspector Emmanuel Haligah indicated that on November 22, 2020 at about 1.00 am, the accused persons charted a Hyundia Gert taxi cab with registration number GW 30-20 driven by the complainant from circle to Teshie.

He said the complainant on reaching a spot near the Lekma Hospital, the accused person told him they have reached their destination, hence would want to alight.

C/Ispt Haligah told that court that Bawa was seated at the back seat and Ayuba was seated at the front seat.

He added while the complainant turn to collect the fares as Al had pretended he was paying him the money, smeared powdered pepper in his face and A2 attacked and forcefully took the ignition key from him.

According to him, the complainant managed to get hold of Al and started struggling with him and in the process Al’s right middle finger got into the complainant’s mouth and he bit it.

The prosecutor said the after the accused persons sensed danger, bolted away with the ignition key and cash in the sum of GH¢350.00, leaving their X-inova mobile phone in complainant’s vehicle.

He said the complainant sustain injury in the mouth.

The prosecuting officer added that in the course of investigations Al was arrested and he identified the mobile phone they left in complainant’s taxi to belong to A2, for which he led police to arrest him from his hide out.

“And A2 also led police to retrieve the ignition key of Hyundai Gert Taxi from his room. Al and A2 admitted the offence, in their caution statement and also told police that they also snatched a vehicle from its owner on 18/10/20 which was under investigation at the CID” he added.
